Johannes Heesters dies at 108

Nederlander-born artist Johannes Heesters, who made his title undertaking in Adolf Hitler's Germany and was dogged later within the extended career by debate over his Nazi-era past, died Saturday in Starnberg, Germany. He was 108. The tenor made his debut round the large stage within the Volksoper in Vienna in 1934. His career needed off in Berlin where, starting in 1935 -- couple of years following a Nazis needed energy -- he increased being a crowd favorite within the Komische Oper and Admiralspalast. He acquired fame by turning up in films for instance "Die Leuchter des Kaisers" (The Emperor's Candlesticks) and "Das Hofkonzert" (Legal Court Concert). Despite his recognition inside the Third Reich, Heesters was not ever billed with like a propagandist or anything aside from a designer ready to perform for your Nazis, as well as the Allies allowed him to continue his career following a war, because he needed Austrian citizenship. In Heesters' native Netherlands -- which was occupied by Germany for almost all the war -- some seen him as irredeemable given his looks beneath the Nazi regime. In February 2008, he braved protests to complete inside the Netherlands the first time in 44 years inside a theater within the native Amersfoort. In the earlier attempt, in 1964, he was booed in the stage in Amsterdam because he tried to look since the Nazi-disliking Captain Von Trapp in "The Appear of Music." Heesters mentioned it gave him a "heavy heart" to know he was "not wanted throughout my homeland." "What did I really do wrong? Sure, I socialized in films inside the Third Reich, entertainment films, which distracted many people inside and outdoors Germany from daily existence throughout war," he written later in regards to the reception he received. "But apart from my career -- cheap, through no-fault of my own, personal, Adolf Hitler was one of the fans of my art -- what have I done?" Experts centered on a holiday Heesters made to the Dachau concentration camping in 1941. In December 2008, Heesters lost the best bid to pressure a German author to retract accusations he sang for SS troops. Heesters maintained he'd been bought to go to Dachau with the Nazis to ensure that they are able to trick everyone in what actually was happening there, but mentioned the alleged performance "never happened." But Berlin author Volker Kuehn reported the interview with former Dachau inmate Viktor Matejka where the prisoner appreciated "I attracted the curtain for him, I used to be there, I saw him singing." At concerning the time in the court situation, Heesters was proven around the Nederlander tv series proclaiming that Hitler was "an excellent guy." His wife, Simone Rethel, immediately intervened, proclaiming that Hitler was the worst criminal in the world. "I realize, toy," Heesters responded. "But he was nice in my opinion. In . Rethel protested following a clip was broadcast, telling Nederlander papers he happen to be misled into making the remarks, which the program had eliminate the areas in the interview where Heesters condemned the Nazi regime. New Report Values Facebook at $6.5 Billion; Site's 'Timeline' Feature Finally Rolls Out

Theo Wargo/WireImage/Getty ImagesRussell Brand Russell Brand is heading to TV with FX.our editor recommendsRussell Brand to Star in and Produce Comedy 'The President Stole My Girlfriend' (Exclusive)Russell Brand Pens an Essay on the London RiotsMTV Video Music Awards' Amy Winehouse Tribute: Russell Brand, Tony Bennett, Bruno Mars Pay Their Respects (Video) The male-skewing cable network has inked a deal with the comedian for a six-episode half-hour late-night series set to debut in the spring. Featuring Brand's take on current events, politics and pop culture, each installment in the six-episode project will be taped in front of a live audience and feature interactive components with those in attendance. "We're very excited to add Russell Brand's bracingly funny, original, and honest voice to the FX comedy lineup," FX executive vp original programming Nick Grad said in a statement announcing the news Thursday."We look forward to supporting Russell and his partner Troy Miller's ambition to strip down the hosted comedy format to its most fundamental elements and to create something daring and unfiltered for the FX audience." Produced by FX Productions in association with Branded Films and Dakota Films, the pact marks the first television deal for Branded Films. The comedian will serve as an executive producer alongside Miller and Nik Linnen, with Miller also serving as a director on the series. The project joins an FX lineup that features scripted comedies including Louie, Wilfred and the recently renewed The League, among others, and represents the network's entry into the late-night field. "I am so excited I'm on the point of climax, in fact I will put the 'O' into FX, which spells Fox, which is actually the channel's real name," Brand said. "That's the only thing that worries me about all this to be honest. At least I'll be able to have a Christmas drink with Bill O'Reilly." The news comes as Bravo also is expanding its foothold in the genre, growing Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens: Live to five nights a week; MTV has also been vocal in its desire to beef up its late-night block. Brand, best known for his bad-boy role as Aldous Snow in Judd Apatow's Forgetting Sarah Marshall, began his career as a stand-up coming before rising to stardom on the big screen. Miller is an 11-time Emmy nominee and two-time winner for directing, with credits including Flight of the Conchords, Parks and Recreation, The Office, Happy Endings and more. He has produced and directed short films which open the Oscar telecast and the MTV Movie Awards. FX topper John Landgraff told THR in March that he'd love to have a daily late-night show. "I would still love to have a daily show," he said. "I don't mean The Daily Show -- though, of course, I'd love to have that, too -- but a daily show. I think it's really great, as a channel, if you have something where original episodes are produced 30, 40 weeks a year. "I think both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have invented entirely new shows that nobody's ever seen before," he said of how he'd tackle the genre differently. "If Dave Chappelle said, 'I want to do a half-hour comedy/variety show,' and he had the right people around him, he'd invent something that was different. So just because innovation is hard doesn't mean that it's impossible." Email: Lesley.Goldberg@thr.com; Twitter: @Snoodit PHOTO GALLERY: View Gallery Amy Winehouse Career in Pictures Russell Brand FX

Old Dog (Khyi rgan)

A Himalaya Audio & Visual Culture Communication production. (International sales: Himalaya Audio & Visual Culture Communication, Beijing.) Produced by Zhang Xianmin. Directed, written by Pema Tseden. With: Lochey, Drolma Kyab, Tamdrin Tso, Yanbum Gyal, Chokyong Gyal. (Tibetan dialogue)A father and son tussle over whether to sell the family's mastiff in "Old Dog," a spare but stealthily powerful tale set in contempo Tibet from local up-and-comer Pema Tseden. Flecked with Chekhovian melancholy but also welcome moments of humor, this skillfully lensed digital pic is a bit more critical of Chinese culture, in an oblique way, than Tseden's previous two features ("The Silent Holy Stones," "The Search"), but not so much as to impede its access to the international festival scene, where it's picked up a few awards already. Whether it will ever open at home remains to be seen. In the mountainous Chinese region of Qinghai, which covers part of what used to be Tibet, a young man named Gonpo (Drolma Kyab) rides his motorcycle from his sheep farm to what passes for a town in this rural region, followed by his Tibetan mastiff, a breed of dog that looks like a fluffed-up cross between a German shepherd and a St. Bernard. Gonpo has heard that the breed has become highly prized in urban China, so much so that Gonpo decides to pre-empt any potential dog-napping by selling the hound to a shady dealer. Afterwards, he gets drunk on the proceeds and sobers up at home, where his elderly father, Akku (Lochey), is furious that he sold the dog, whom Akku raised from puppyhood. Akku rides back to the town on his horse and manages, after considerable negotiation, to retrieve the dog, with some help from his relative, a local cop (Chokyong Gyal). Unfortunately for the poor mutt, this isn't the last time he'll suffer separation anxiety, as he duly gets stolen in the night, and Akku must go in search of him again. Meanwhile, at home it becomes clear there's tension brewing between Gonpo and his wife, who after three years of marriage still hasn't managed to conceive. Lensing by Sonthar Gyal, who recently helmed "The Sun-Beaten Path," deliberately refrains from offering any closeups, so almost all the action unfolds at a distance from the camera, which creates a slightly stiff, theatrical feeling. That said, what the lensing loses in intimacy it gains in sweep and scope, so that the spectacular mountain landscape and the filthy, cruddy-looking township virtually become characters in their own right. Despite flashes of gentle, naturalistic humor, a sense of foreboding is pervasive; even so, the bleak last scene still comes as a shock. Thesping from a mix of pro and non-pro thesps is fine, and the pacing is fairly sprightly given that so much of the pic consists of watching people walking, driving or riding horses within static frames. Other tech credits are functional without being outstanding in any way.Camera (color, HD), Sonthar Gyal; editor, Sangye Bhum; production designer, Gyal; sound, Dula Tserang. Courage (Wymyk)

A Best Film discharge of an Opus Film production using the support from the Polish Film Institute, Ekran. Created by Piotr Dzieciol, Lukasz Dzieciol. Directed by Greg Zglinski. Script, Janusz Marganski, Zglinski. With: Robert Wieckiwicz, Lukasz Simlat, Gabriela Muskala, Marian Dziedziel, Karolina Kominek, Anna Tomaszewska.A brother or sister competition along with a random act of savagery supply the backdrop for Polish director Greg Zglinski to understand more about primal styles of cowardice, guilt and redemption in "Courage," his tightly scripted follow-as much as his 2004 debut, "One Lengthy Winter Without Fire." A contemporary-day undertake the storyline of Cain and Abel employing a couple of Polish cinema's toughest-working male stars, this precisely lensed moral tale might be a tad heavy-handed for theatrical play offshore. Still, it will excite lots of discussion around the fest circuit. (Belgium) Essaying another kind of tortured soul compared to one he plays in Polish Oscar submission "In Darkness," Robert Wieckiwicz is Fred, a tough, unschooled sort who handles his ailing father's Internet empire inside a quiet suburb of Lodz and resents his college-educated more youthful brother, Jurek (Lukasz Simlat), who lately came back in the U.S. packed with ambitious suggestions for the organization. Feeling he has drawn a lot more than his great amount of parental-care duty, Fred also feels bitter about Jurek's two hyperactive kids, since he has not had the opportunity to possess a child together with his hairstylist wife, Viola (Gabriela Muskala, "Winter"). Fred attempts to gain top of the hands, rudely disregarding overtures in the corporate types Jurek is relationship, and having a panic attack his brother with daredevil driving. Nevertheless, widower Jurek has got the sympathies of the snobbish and intimidating parents (Marian Dziedziel, and Anna Tomaszewska) as well as individuals of maternal Viola, who yearns to look after her nephew and niece, departing Fred feeling angry and isolated. Because the antagonistic brothers and sisters go ahead and take train to town in the 20-minute mark, a gang of hooligans boards and harasses a youthful lady (Karolina Kominek). Although Fred informs Jurek to not become involved, the more youthful guy attempts to intervene and it is beaten for his troubles. Slow to react and reluctant when confronted with the youths' violence, Fred does not save his brother from a level worse fate. Following the fast-paced opening section, which economically determines the brothers' antipathy as well as other discontents, the pic manages to lose one type of tension while having fun with another: When will Fred's family notice his new, more embarrassing type of impotence? As the script, co-compiled by Janusz Marganski and Zglinski, cleverly helps make the Internet greater than a mere backdrop towards the story, another story threads appear as less credible, particularly Fred's single-handed searching for from the crooks. Throughout the seven years since he helmed his first feature, Zglinski directed numerous instances of Polish TV serials, which possibly makes up about his inclination to extract slightly overstated performances from his thesps. His positioning from the camera is a little subtler, with angles and arrangements frequently indicating a lot more than the actors' words. Tech credits are solid, particularly production design, as variations in clothing and vehicle types instantly telegraph the gulf between your brothers' sensibilities. Kudos will also be because of the propulsive, moderately used score by Jacek Grudzien and Mariusz Ziemba. Pic nabbed a unique jury prize as well as an actor jerk for Wieckiwicz in the recent Warsaw fest.Camera (color), Witold Plociennik editor, Leszek Starzynski music, Jacek Grudzien, Mariusz Ziemba production designer, Elwira Pluta costume designer, Malgorzata Zacharska seem (Dolby Digital Surround EX), Michal Kosterkiewicz. 'Harry Potter' DVD Exclusive: J.K. Rowling And The Women Of 'Potter'

It's hard to argue that one of the most badass breakout characters in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" is Professor Minerva McGonagall. And author J.K. Rowling fought to keep it that way. Fans who have seen the movie (and read the book) know that there's a pretty big showdown between McGonagall and Professor Snape about halfway through the story. According to Rowling, an early draft of Steve Kloves' script had Harry Potter facing off against Snape instead of McGonagall. That was not something she was going to allow to happen. "I don't like the marginalization of women when the fighting breaks out. We get to fight too. I really wanted that," she explained in an exclusive MTV News sneak peek at a featurette from the "Deathly Hallows Part 2" Blu-ray and DVD, in stores on November 11. "In the book, Minerva McGonagall is the one who does it and for me it was very important that she did that." For Rowling, it was important that McGonagall got her moment in the spotlight. Bonnie Wright, who plays Ginny Weasley in the films, said that seeing McGonagall show off her true strength was one of her favorite parts of the movie. "Teachers have been so repressed in how they see Hogwarts. Obviously from its new sort of ruling, you can see that they're just itching for their fight back against evil and I love that. Professor McGonagall, she just completely shows what she's made of," Wright said. "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" hits DVD and Blu-Ray on November 11. Are you glad McGonagall got her big battle scene against Snape? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!

Exclusive 'Rum Diary' Clip: The Actor-brad Pitt Likes His Cocktails in New Film

.publish-content img The Actor-brad Pitt is not playing Hunter S. Thompson within the adaptation from the gonzo journalist and author's novel 'The Rum Diary,' but his Paul Kemp certainly shows a couple of classic Thompson traits. As an relationship with alcohol. Because this new clip from 'The Rum Diary' shows, Kemp's boozy ways may well be a problem in the newspaper he would go to write for in Puerto Rico. Charlies Angels Finds Home In Miami

MIAMI, Fla. -- Miami might be the brand new capital of scotland - angels no less than the city of Charlies Angels. ABC is jumping into the reboot game this fall by getting an up-to-date version in the classic series that starts the systems Thursday evening prime-time selection. Moving its setting and production from La to Florida, the completely new show will receive a new beginning in the new city. The remake tries to distance itself within the camping in the seventies version, striving to become more grounded action series. The initial episode begins with two Angels a classic crook carried out by Rachael Taylor together with a disgraced officer carried out by Annie Ilonzeh seeing the next part of their team destroyed within a mission. Their boss Charlie Townsend and also the assistant Bosley carried out by Ramon Rodriguez persuade the kids to recruit a completely new Angel, a street racer carried out by Minka Kelly. With Came Barrymore an Angel inside the 2000 and 2003 films being a professional producer, the show was produced by Al Gough and Miles Millar, the duo behind the hit WB show Smallville, which adopted the exploits from the youthful, pre-Superman Clark Kent. ABC happen to be prone to restore Charlies Angels for quite a while when Gough and Millar got involved last spring. They acknowledge that fans have certain anticipation and may scream once they arent met. The first Charlies Angels will be a cultural phenomenon if the first demonstrated in 1976, making stars of Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Cruz. Fawcett shown particularly popular, with boys posting her legendary poster inside their rooms and ladies copying her feathered hair. The initial episode in the new Charlies Angels is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. EDT Thursday, the 35th anniversary in the originals premiere. If you say youre prone to reboot Charlies Angels, you're simply hanging a sizable target laying lying on your back, Gough mentioned. What to do ideally is reunite by getting a crowd that loved the show after they were youthful in addition to bring new fans in it. Nevertheless the new show starts fresh: These Angels arent saints. Inside the original, the women had all taught to become L.A. cops but sexism inside the department had left them banished to menial positions, so Charlie employed them really was detectives. Inside the new series, the Angels all have sketchy pasts. Charlie recruits these to give them another chance, while using the capabilities they developed as crooks to accomplish good. Theyresort of Angels with dirty faces, Gough mentioned. Taylor mentioned she and her co-stars want toward placing modern twist round the mythology. Even though they were very awesome and effective, we wish to do our personal version, Taylor mentioned. According to Ilonzeh, the chemistry among the different figures is what drove the old series as well as the movies. The knowledge as well as the cases as well as the crooks as well as the explosions and many types of the sparks as well as the glamour as well as the fashion as well as the makeup, people are merely the additional supplies, Ilonzeh mentioned. Nonetheless it is the connection thats really prone to grab everyone. The completely new show promises plenty of action, but producers are trying to obtain a more realistic feel, departing the gravity repel Wire Fu acrobatics featured inside the films. We perform a little of all things, stunt coordinator Artie Malesci mentioned. Were round the water. Were under water. We've watercraft. We've helis. All of us perform some vehicle work. We perform a lot of fighting. We perform a lot of gun play. We perform a lot of scaling structures. The heavens do the majority of the stunts themselves, Malesci mentioned. They train a good deal, he mentioned. I realize them adequate to understand what they could do and whatever they cant do. There's a particular point where I believe that no, and so they hate that. Kelly mentioned doing the stunts is among her favorite causes of the show. I like my job. I like just as one actor, Kelly mentioned. But if you are dealing with visit and be physical and learn how to drift cars and scuba dive and horseback ride and learn to fight Krav Maga (an Israeli fighting styles technique). People are things Ill have with me at night for your relaxation of my existence. Filming extensively in Florida through the summer time season doesn't come without its problems. On one recent shoot a daytime fashion show scene inside a downtown park the heavens hidout inside an air-conditioned van between takes to obtain their makeup from melting. Meanwhile, a lot of accessories looked for shade and fans, attempting to not sweat through their formal placed on. Still included in the completely new show is Charlies speakerphone, where the unseen maestro notifies his Angels regarding new missions. Gough mentioned one challenge was creating reasonable to take advantage from it inside the reboot. Charlies around the box, around the speakerphone, which in 1976 was possibly the peak of technology, Gough mentioned. This Season, less. You've Skype. You've video chat. Why guy still around the box? While Charlie ongoing to become a mysterious inside the original series too as with the two films, Gough mentioned audiences will discover much more about him inside the new series and possibly why hes so secretive. Bosley may also be acquiring a larger role. Inside the old series, Bosley felt like the women valet, which we didnt might like to do that, Gough mentioned. The completely new Bosley is closer to the Angels in age and even more mixed up in missions. He's basically the fourth Angel, Gough mentioned. Rodriguez mentioned he was surprised when he was approached to fill the role, formerly held by David Doyle, Bill Murray and Bernie Mack. Not just comedy relief, Bosley now hacks personal computers and beats up crooks, while hiding their very own shady past. Hes certainly got a good deal happening, Rodriguez mentioned. Charlies Angels is Fundamental steps first large work for balance remaking a substantial series. The practice may appear a guaranteed recipe for fulfillment, but also for every Battlestar Galactica or Hawaii Five-, there's a Bionic Lady or Dark evening Driver that died throughout its first season. Gough mentioned CBSs Hawaii Five- is a good instance of mixing fun figures, exciting action moments and wonderful locations one for his Charlies Angels. Partof achieving people beautiful locations for Charlies Angels was filming the show in Miami instead of La. Florida gets the designer and cultural diversity of NY, the nice cozy weather and wonderful beaches of los angeles, which is a gateway to Latin America as well as the Caribbean. If you come lower here, you're feeling it, executive producer and director Marcos Siega mentioned. You will discover plenty of South Us citizens, plenty of Males and ladies. In my opinion the city itself felt being an exciting change. Copyright 2011 by Connected Press. All rights reserved. These elements is probably not launched, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

'Men' preems to record 27.8 million for CBS

Ashton Kutcher's debut on CBS laffer 'Two and a Half Men' drew a whopping 27.8 million viewers Monday night.Ashton Kutcher's debut on CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men" drew the show's largest audience ever - 27.8 million, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates - and a mammoth 10.3 rating in adults 18-49 as the Eye won the opening night of the season in all key demo categories. The previous highs for the long-running show came in May 2005, when it followed the "Everybody Loves Raymond" series finale with an 8.1 demo rating and 24.2 million viewers overall. Last season, a truncated one for the series due to the exit of Charlie Sheen, "Men" peaked with a 4.9 rating in 18-49 and 17.9 million viewers overall.Monday's demo score is the best for any primetime entertainment telecast since the Academy Awards in February, and tops the 9.2 for May's finale of Fox's "American Idol." And both the demo and total-viewer count are the best for the season/series premiere of an entertainment series since ABC's second-season opener of "Desperate Housewives" in September 2005.The big showing at 9 p.m. for CBS provided substantial sampling for the premiere of half-hour "Two Broke Girls" (7.0/16 in 18-49, 19.2 million viewers overall) at its special 9:30 p.m. time before moving to 8:30 next week. "Broke Girls" beat ABC's "Dancing" by 7 shares in adults 18-49 and gave CBS its best showing in the timeslot since "Men" in May 2005; it also drew the largest overall audience for the series premiere of a fall comedy since NBC's "Inside Schwartz" (airing behind "Friends") in 2001.Also impressing Monday in its cliffhanger return was ABC drama "Castle" (3.3/8 in 18-49, 13.6 million viewers overall), which was up nicely over last year. The mystery series and the second-season premiere of CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" (3.4/8 in 18-49, 12.0 million viewers overall) made life difficult for competing 10 p.m. NBC drama "The Playboy Club" (1.6/4 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall), which had a modest premiere on what has been a tough night for the net. One year ago, the series opener of "Chase" did better for NBC (2.3/6 in 18-49).Elsewhere Monday, ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" (3.9/10 in 18-49, 18.6 million viewers overall) was down more than 20% from its premiere of last fall but teamed with "Castle" to put ABC ahead for the night in total viewers.CBS opened with the best premieres score yet for "How I Met Your Mother" (4.7/13 in 18-49, 11.3 million viewers overall in its regular 8 p.m. slot and 5.1/13 in 18-49 and 12.2 million in a special airing at 8:30), which easily led its hour among young adults and provided the net with roughly 45% time-period improvement over last year's openers of "Mother" and "Rules of Engagement." For the night, CBS prevailed over runner-up ABC by 5 shares in adults 18-49 and by 4 shares in 25-54.Fox went with the season finale of summer series "Hell's Kitchen" (2.5/6 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall) and finished third among the broadcasters for the night in 18-49. The net bows dinosaur drama "Terra Nova" next week, and veteran drama "House" returns the following week. At NBC, "The Sing-Off" opened to a 1.9/5 in 18-49 and 5.2 million viewers overall from 8 to 10 p.m. - lagging the competition but the best non-sports demo delivery in the time period for the net since mid-January. Compared to last year's opening night, when it was boosted by good series premiere scores for "The Event," NBC's combo of "Sing-Off" and "Playboy Club" was down about 30% in 18-49 rating (1.8 vs. 2.6 for the night). Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 5.7/14; ABC, 3.7/9; Fox, 2.5/6; NBC, 1.8/4; Univision, 1.74/; CW, 0.4/1.In total viewers: ABC, 16.9 million; CBS, 15.7 million; NBC and Fox, 5.1 million; Univision, 3.8 million; CW, 1.1 million. Prime Suspect

'Prime Suspect'Credits: Filmed in NY by Film 44 and ITV Studios America in association with Universal Media Studios. Executive producers, Peter Berg, Sarah Aubrey, Alexandra Cunningham, Julie Meldal-Johnson, Paul Buccieri, Lynda LaPlante, John McNamara; co-executive producers, Ron Fitzgerald, Tyler Bensinger, Jonas Pate; supervising producer, Randy Huggins; producer, Nan Bernstein Freed; director, Berg; writer, Cunningham; based on the series created by LaPlante. With: Maria Bello, Brian F. O'Byrne, Kirk Acevedo, Peter Gerety, Tim Griffin, Damon Gupton, Kenny Johnson, Aidan Quinn, Jason Beghe.Knighthood might not be in the cards, but Maria Bello's considerable charisma provides the strongest reason to watch "Prime Suspect," a belated adaptation of the British miniseries that helped put the Dame in Helen Mirren. Following the original template with some fidelity but also including its own wrinkles, the show gets past the first hurdle by selling Bello's Jane Timoney as a woman struggling to gain respect and acceptance in an old boy's club of NY detectives. Surrounded by a solid supporting cast, it's a workable if not quite prime piece of development. Dismissed and denied cases by her condescending male colleagues, Jane doesn't get much sympathy from her boss (Aidan Quinn), and is treated with open hostility by the likes of Irish cop Reg Duffy (Bryan O'Byrne, channeling Dennis Franz), especially when she seizes on a sudden and unexpected opening to seek advancement within their unit. Her first case, meanwhile, involves a grisly home-invasion robbery and murder that left an understandably traumatized young boy behind as a witness. As directed by Peter Berg from Alexandra Cunningham's adaptation, the whole exercise is gritty and spare, in keeping with a long history of NBC cop dramas. Jane's take-no-prisoners attitude causes even the few detectives who are relatively friendly to her situation to wonder about her drive. "Do you ever worry that someone might drop a house on you?" asks Det. Luisito Calderon (Kirk Acevedo) after she questions a witness. An "ER" alum (thus returning to an old scheduling haunt) and indie film darling, Bello is the whole package as this character: Tough, demanding, yet still sexy and beautiful. Hell, she even looks good in a goofy hat. There is also promise -- series-wise, if not so much in the pilot, in her extended circle -- which includes the always-welcome Peter Gerety as her dad. Whether that's enough -- given there's not much that's distinctive about the premise, and a whole slew of crime-fighting females, such as "The Closer," who came about after Mirren originated the role two decades ago -- remains to be seen. NBC has said the gender politics will be dialed back going forward, which is logical given the show's anachronistic aspects, but that only threatens to make this a more homogenized crime procedural -- and put more weight on Bello's shoulders. Practically speaking, the series doesn't figure to have a sizable lead-in from NBC's comedies, but on the plus side faces two established dramas whose audience is pretty much locked in place, offering the possibility of sampling. Throw in NBC's tempered expectations for new 10 p.m. dramas in the post-Jay Leno experiment era, and that could bode well for "Prime Suspect" avoiding its own premature demise. If so, it'll be because Bello is on the case.Camera, Todd McMullen; production designer, Tim Galvin; editors, Dody Dorn, Robb Sullivan; music, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman; casting, Linda Lowy, John Brace. 60 MIN. The Raid

An Alliance Films (in Canada) discharge of a PT Merantau Films/Abc Films/Celluloid Bad dreams presentation. (Worldwide sales: Celluloid Bad dreams, Paris/La.) Created by Ario Sagantoro. Executive producers, R. Maya Barack-Evans, Irwan D. Mussry, Nate Bolotin, Todd Brown. Directed, written, edited by Gareth Huw Evans. With: Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim. Doni Alamsyah, Yayan Ruhian, Pierre Gruno, Tegar Satrya, Ray Sahetapy. The ultimate credits roll, listing figures for example "Hole Drop Attacker" and "Machete Gang Member," only shows the amount of mayhem in Gareth Huw Evans' "The Raid." Indeed, moviegoers might want the projectionist could replay a few of the spectacular sequences within this incredible and extremely violent cop-versus.-gangster fight-athon, where a SWAT-like unit invades a 15-story building and needs to arrive at the top, floor by floor, to create lower the theif. Using the genre to some greater degree of intensity, the Welsh-born Evans continues what he began in the past Indonesia-set actioner "Merantau," but this pic will seal his cult status. As efficient since it's title signifies, "The Raid" provides a continuous sequence of action having a obvious and effective premise: If police can arrive at the top floor, there is a opportunity to bring lower major drug kingpin Tama (Ray Sahetapy). Further complicating matters is always that many cops within the unit are unskilled within the make of intense urban combat required here, which their corrupt boss, Lt. Wahyu (Pierre Gruno), may compromise the whole operation. That's about just as much plot because the movie can be involved with, or needs. Hard-ass cop Rama (Iko Uwais, "Merantau," inside a star-making role) is sparkling clean and tenacious like a bulldozer. In a few minutes of quietly penetrating the building's interior (the result strengthened by total silence on the soundtrack that otherwise provides huge punches of pure, sonic energy), Rama's males belong to assault by Tama's smartly placed models, including prepubescent spotters and endless supplies of dudes with heavy machine guns. Tama observes everything on the large bank of monitors in the control room, assisted by his callous henchmen Andi (Doni Alamsyah) and Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian). Tama can also be in a position to deliver messages within the building's PA system, to ensure that everybody can hear his message, "We now have site visitors." It is the signal for those-out war. The ensuing 1 hour 30 minutes are largely a hands-to-hands, fist-to-face, feet-to-groin fight, having a couple of machetes and guns thrown in permanently measure. Pic handles to produce the feeling of the type of live-action ride, where Evans as conductor modulates the go up and down of action, and alternates pace and volume, with selected interludes of story to trap a person's breath. The result is exhilarating for audiences available to the sheer visceral sensation from the physical experience, no matter a person's predilection toward fight photos. Still, there's ample close-up, flesh-ripping violence to create even hardened audiences wince. The pic's combat style, silat, is definitely an Indonesian martial-arts form this is a more brawling type of fighting than more broadly known styles. Think about it as being the National football league overtaking kung fu, but a great deal nastier, using the action getting wilder the flooring -- and also the casualties in Rama's forces -- mount. It's not hard to your investment story altogether within the sheer hurry of Rama's fight up floor rather, audiences will question the way the amazing fight that simply ended may be capped. But it's, over and over. A five-minute fight that has flying, nipping areas of the body particularly shows the elegance within the fight choreography by Evans, Uwais and Ruhian. A lot more than most martial-arts photos, "The Raid" recalls the dwelling of the movie musical, where a simple story bridges the amounts and sequences. Ultimately, there's enough to among the pic's side tales (including siblings on opposite sides from the fight) that, drawn in tandem with righting the incorrect of political corruption, enables items to finish on the significantly satisfying note. Moti D. Setyanto's terrific production design represents the inside of the building like a perpetual maze, both up and down and flat. It isn't surprising the project required two lensers (Matt Flannery and Dimas Imam Subhono), because the camera frequently seems to ignore gravity inside a mission to obtain fresh angles about the fight. Technically, the pic's inside a league alone among Indonesian films. After this pic's first Toronto screening, producers introduced the soundtrack is going to be entirely modified by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Although it will add an industrial kick towards the film, it will appear curious considering the brilliant soundtrack displayed in the screening examined.Camera (color), Matt Flannery, Dimas Imam Subhono music, Fajar Yuskemal, Aria Prayogi production designer, Moti D. Annabeth Gish "The physician has gone out.Inch Now that can not be good. This closing-moments text from your elusive "A" sent a chill with the Pretty Little Liars - and fans - last evening following the gang's shrink, Dr. Sullivan, summoned these phones her office to show that "A" was possibly among her clients. Regrettably, after they showed up in this area, our dear Doc was nowhere found, nor was the situation-file that (possibly) held the key towards the show's central stalker. The sick a part of us type of hopes so, because this seriously ups the overall game and provides the women a foe who's prepared to kill anybody to have their secret. However the more healthy (less homicidal) a part of us is keeping our fingers entered that we'll see much more of Annabeth Gish's so-awesome clinical mental health specialist. Otherwise in here, maybe an hour or so afterwards The Laying Game...cause that switcheroo scene gets just like crazy, too! What is your opinion? May be the PLL body count going to rise again? Weekend Forecast: Will The Help Clean Up Final Destination 5?

Say hello to August and its snazzy genre-specific programming! The four wide releases this weekend cater to quarantined-off needs, meaning there’s something in theaters for your whole family — from mom (The Help) to stoner brother (30 Minutes or Less) to thrill-seeking sister (Final Destination 5) to kid cousin (Glee: The 3-D Concert Movie). Which film will wind up atop the box office come Sunday night? To the forecast! NATIONAL OUTLOOK · Final Destination 5: Fun fact: the last horror movie to hit theaters in wide release was Scream 4 back in April. Before that, it was Insidious — also in April. Which is another way of saying that unless you count Priest — you shouldn’t — horror fans have had precious little to see in theaters during the last four months. It’s because of that likely pent-up horror demand — plus 3-D surcharges — that Final Destination 5 could greatly exceed expectations over the next three days. Keep in mind, The Final Destination grossed $27.4 million during its opening frame in 2009, and that film was up against Halloween II — which siphoned off another $16 million of horror dough. The only other horror flick in theaters this weekend is Glee: The 3D Concert Movie. Even death can’t stop the Final Destination franchise. FORECAST: $31.9 million · The Help: August wouldn’t be August without a highly anticipated lady lit adaptation. On Aug. 7, 2009, Julie & Julia headed to theaters and added $20 million to its butter-soaked coffers; on Aug. 13, 2010, Julia Roberts grabbed $23 million in gelato money from Eat Pray Love. This weekend, The Help arrives, poised to succeed — clean up, if you will — in similar fashion. Since opening on Wednesday, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel has earned $5 million — though its bread-and-butter audience is unlikely to rush out for midnight showings (think: your mother). With strong reviews — something that helps when courting older audiences — plus already growing Oscar buzz, The Help could flirt with the $27 million that The Devil Wears Prada earned over its opening weekend in June of 2008. FORECAST: $26.9 million · 30 Minutes or Less: The Change-Up notwithstanding, this has been the summer of successful R-rated comedies. Into this barrage of money-earning f-bombs comes 30 Minutes Or Less, with slight box office expectations and somewhat little buzz (unless that buzz is about how the film was based on the real-life death of pizza delivery man Brian Wells). Actual question: Shouldn’t more people be excited for the reunion of Zombieland cohorts Jesse Eisenberg and director Ruben Fleischer? Alas! Comedy nerds will be out in full force, but is that enough to keep it from earning a relatively low number — at least compared to Bridesmaids, Horrible Bosses and Bad Teacher? The guess here is no. FORECAST: $12.9 · Glee: The 3D Concert Movie: As the great — and apparently absent — Sue Sylvester said of Glee: The 3D Concert Movie: Stop believing. Even hardcore fans were disappointed in the second season of the Fox hit (which saw its ratings dwindle slightly in the spring), and the recent Ryan Murphy Scorched Earth press tour did nothing to engender goodwill to non-devotees. This one is preaching solely to the choir, and when it comes to box office that isn’t a good thing. FORECAST: $8 million REGIONAL OUTLOOK If you’re in the mood for critical acclaim, there’s Senna, Asif Kapadia’s documentary about Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, which opens in New York and Los Angeles. If you’re in the mood for love (and smut), though, buy a plane ticket to Austin or San Francisco. That’s where China Lion Film Distribution, Inc. will unveil 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, “the world’s first erotic 3D film.” Suck it, Avatar! (Ew. Sorry.) Care to call your shot? Joanna

An Akson Studio, Narodowe Centrum Kultury and Polish Film Institute production. Produced by Michal Kwiecinski. Executive producer, Katarzyna Fukacz-Cebula. Directed, written by Feliks Falk. With: Urszula Grabowska, Sara Knothe, Joachim Paul Assbock, Stanislawa Celinska, Monika Kwiatkowska, Halina Labonarska, Iza Kung, Kinga Preis. (Polish, French, German dialogue)In "Joanna," the titular heroine endures constant stress by illegally harboring a Jewish child during the German occupation, perhaps appropriate for the lastest film from Polish helmer Feliks Falk, whose work in the 1970s is most closely associated with the nation's Cinema of Moral Anxiety movement. This earnest, well-acted drama reps a respectable wade into a bleak historical chapter, but can't quite avoid a sense of familiar terrain trod more memorably. Pic's emphasis on closeups and one interior locale will work best in broadcast settings. Joanna (Urszula Grabowska) is an educated Warsaw resident reduced to menial work by the wartime economy, while a housing shortage brings pressure on her to take additional tenants into the spacious apartment she once shared with a husband, missing since he was conscripted two years earlier. One day during her waitress shift at a cafe, her customers include a nervous young woman (Halina Labonarska) who's ventured out against her better judgement as a birthday treat for 7-year-old Roza (Sara Knothe). Their worst fears materialize when the establishment is raided by authorities hunting for Jews. Mother and daughter are separated, the former arrested while the child hides in a church across the street. She's later found there by childless Joanna, who impulsively takes the girl home for safekeeping and makes covert efforts to trace the parent's whereabouts. Child and protector quickly bond. Already well accustomed to making herself scarce, Roza knows how to stay quiet and out of neighbors' sight. But the risk remains great for both of them, heightened by Joanna's nosy landlady, the possibility of being forced to find a co-tenant, and possible military inspection -- the last of which indeed comes to pass, leaving Joanna to somehow deflect the romantic advances of a Nazi officer (Joachim Paul Assbock). A few too many crises pile up, making the pic increasingly feel like a melodramatic showcase for star histrionics. (Grabowska duly won actress nods at the Moscow Fest and Polish Film Awards.) Some of Roza's dialogue is a little too precocious, despite Knothe's solid perf. Still, Falk confidently imbues the pic with the solemn weight necessary for the story to achieve at least some of its desired tragic power. Color palette is muted, score sometimes a tad overbearing. The first San Francisco Jewish Fest screening was on projected HD, due to a shipping delay in the 35mm print.Camera (color), Piotr Sliskowski; editor, Krzysztof Szpetmanski; music, Bartek Gliniak; production designer, Anna Wunderlich; costume designer, Magdalena Biedrzycka; sound (Dolby Digital), Maria Chilarecka; casting, Ewa Brodzka. Check Out the Poster for Apollo 18: In Spacesuit, No One Can Hear You Scream

Another day, another hair-raising poster that terrible parents let their kids see. This one’s a closeup of an astronaut presumably waiting to perish in Apollo 18, a disturbing “found-footage” mockumentary in the style of The Blair Witch Project and The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Handle it? This calls to mind a number of traumatic memories for me — my nightmarishly long stay at space camp, one of those scary Six Flags ads with the upside-down coaster zealots, that time I considered seeing Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and worse, a dentist appointment from the future. Freaky-deaky, indeed! Here’s the trailer. Comes out September 2. Bring extra gravity to the theater. [via Moviefone]

George Lucas Loses Stormtrooper copyright fight

The man who made the original Stormtrooper helmets for Star Wars has won a legal battle to sell replicas in the UK.  Andrew Ainsworth argued that the costumes were not subject to full copyright laws because they were functional items rather than artistic works.  The ruling by judges at the UK Supreme Court upheld a 2009 Court of Appeal decision which allowed the 62-year-old to continue selling them.  "This is a massive victory, a total victory, we've already got the champagne out," Ainsworth told the BBC.  The prop designer from south London, who sells the outfits for around £1,800 each, said he went to court on principle as he didn't want to allow director George Lucas to "buy his soul". However, the court also ruled that Lucasfilm's copyright had been violated in the US, where Ainsworth has already stopped selling the outfits.  Lucasfilm said it remains committed to aggressively protecting its intellectual property rights, adding that the court's decision maintained "an anomaly of British copyright law under which the creative and highly artistic works made for use in films may not be entitled to copyright protection in the UK".

First trailer for Steven Soderbergh=?UTF-8?B?4oCZ?=s Contagion unleashed

*The first trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s virus
thriller _Contagion_ has been unleashed online.*

Far from simply promising us _Outbreak II: The Virus Strikes Back_,
Soderbergh’s film instead appears to be a terrifyingly realistic
portrayal of a deadly epidemic.

With no less than six massive A-list names involved (and some stellar
support), _Contagion_ looks sort of like a Roland Emmerich epic if
Roland Emmerich made taut, pulse-raising indies.

Tracking the progress of a lethal airborne virus, _Contagion_ stars
Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard,
Lawrence Fishbourne, Bryan Cranston, Demitri Martin and Elliott Gould.

Check out the trailer below…
